Iced latte

The one everyone gets wrong by pouring hot espresso into milk

Two shots, cold milk, full glass of ice, in that order. The order is the recipe.

Ingredients

  • espresso60 ml
  • cold milk150 ml
  • ice150 g
  • syrup, optional10 ml

Method

1

Ice to the top

A full glass melts slower than a half glass. This is the single biggest fix for weak iced coffee.

2

Milk and syrup

Cold milk over the ice, syrup stirred in now while there is room to stir.

3

Float the espresso

Pour slowly over the back of a spoon for the layered look, or stir it through if you would rather taste it evenly.

Notes

  • Coffee ice cubes. Freeze leftover coffee in a tray. Dilution stops being a problem forever.

Lighter version

Build it on cold brew instead of espresso and you can drop the syrup entirely — cold brew is far less bitter, so it needs less sugar to be drinkable. Unsweetened almond or soy takes it further, and a shake of cinnamon does most of what vanilla syrup was doing.

What you need

  • Espresso machine (pump) or Lever / piston machine or Moka pot
